What is ADHD Coaching?
ADHD coaching is a way to help people navigate the challenges associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Unlike counselling, ADHD coaching focuses on learning about your brain, creating strategies that work for you, and working towards specific goals.
ADHD coaching doesn’t have an age limit, or expect you to come in with specific knowledge, or even specific goals. It’s a way to learn about the unique way you engage with the world, and offer new ideas that you might not have been exposed to if there weren’t any ADHD folks in your life to guide you. It’s also about discovering your strengths, and learning how to cope when things get tough.
When finding the coach that’s right for you, trust your gut to find someone who works with you and supports you in ways that make sense. Don’t let that “maybe I’m the problem” feeling keep you seeing someone who doesn’t work for you. Relationships are unique, and sometimes it takes a while to find the right person.
How will we work together?
I’m here to support you as a mental health professional and as a peer with ADHD. They go hand in hand because some things help to have research behind them, and sometimes you need someone who can empathise and “get” what you’re going through without having to explain yourself in detail. We’ll work together to make sense of the parts of you that are specific to your experience, and the things that you might share with other ADHD folks.
We’ll spend time talking about how your brain works, how ADHD can impact people, and what the research says. Then we’ll take all that and use it to explore the various aspects of your life:
-
Routines
-
Relationships
-
Personal history
-
Your goals and values
Then we can start building systems that work for you. Break down expectations, shame, and the “shoulds” of your life and find what actually works for you to do the things you want to do.
